Metaphysics
There is a great divide in our modern world. The common notion is that faith and spirituality have absolutely no relation to science and fact. This wasn’t always the case, however, as science and spirituality were once taught as the same subject. While advances in modern science and medicine shouldn’t be discounted, empirical science can only explain a portion of our existence in this universe. There are so many questions that neither science nor faith alone can answer that it becomes clear that a synthesis of these two disciplines is needed to gain a true understanding of the universe.
Metaphysics is, in essence, a philosophical study of the universe, its origins and its purpose. It seeks to explain the mysteries of life, the interconnectedness of all things and the true purpose of an individual’s existence without the need to discount scientific fact. This is possibly the most important thing to understand about the study of metaphysics as the word, itself, literally means “beyond physics”. It offers answers to those questions that even the most brilliant scientific minds have failed to find with empirical study alone.
Most people have a feeling that there is more to the universe than what we can see, hear and touch. This is completely natural and is inherent to the human experience. Most people can’t deny that there are certain experiences and coincidences in life that simply cannot be explained away by modern scientific notions of probability and chance. The key to understanding the unseen forces that influence our lives is stepping beyond what is accepted by empirical science and expanding the thought processes we use to determine the best course of action in life.
The goal behind the study of metaphysics is to develop a more complete concept of the universe and broaden our understanding of our experiences. While there are certain spiritual practices that may fall under the category of spiritual metaphysics, the study of this field is really quite broad. The purpose behind the different varieties of metaphysical study is to help the student find a philosophy that speaks to them in a unique and fulfilling way. Far from requiring the student to adhere to a set list of beliefs, the study of metaphysics is designed to allow each person to find their own path to enlightenment.
While metaphysics is a term that is often thrown around a lot, it simply refers to the philosophical study of who we are, why we’re here and how we can understand the mysterious forces at play in our lives. Many people have turned to both science and spirituality to find answers to deep questions that they’ve had all their life. The problem that most people run into is that they are told they can’t believe in both science and faith and must adhere to a strict set of dogma and practices. Many people have found the answers and fulfillment they have been searching for with metaphysics because it offers a free and individual process of enlightenment that synthesizes both empirical science and spiritual faith to create a complete understanding of our origins and purpose in life.
Spiritual Metaphysics
Spiritual metaphysics is essentially what comes to us or what we come to, whenever we are prepared to stop seeing the world from a point of view of separateness. A number of aspects of being are there, including spiritual, emotional, mental and physical. However, the spiritual metaphysics is where spirituality and science not only get together but they support each other, instead of creating a situation of religion versus science. Very few can refute having had a number of the following experiences where a minimum of these aspects are seemingly oddly linked.
- Thinking about a person that you have not seen or thought about in ages and then running into that individual on the street.
- A dull pain in the center of the back which dissipates suddenly once the decision has been taken to let go of past hurts.
- Being aware that something is not quite normal and then only to find out that a relative or friend has died.
- Receiving the answer to a prayer by way of the most extraordinary and unexpected set of circumstances.
- Some of these things could come across as being purely coincidental and society has been taught to view these kinds of events in that manner. However, science is assisting spiritual metaphysics by offering proof of something that is amazing. Events such as these are taking place in a world which is not at all incredibly separate; all of life is energy and in addition to that, what is thought to be the non-physical and the physical is in actuality one and the same.
In the beginning, the metaphysical philosophy was essentially a philosophy of matter, form and causation. However, it would make a lot of sense that something which studies existence and the nature of being, both unseen and seen, would have to include dreams, religion, astrology, psychology, meditation, positive thinking, yoga, clairvoyance, extra-sensory perception, reincarnation, auras, spirits and a myriad of topics. To facilitate properly defining metaphysics, the definition has to include the issues which fall under the realm of spiritual metaphysics.
If there is no involvement of spiritual metaphysics, no way is there to totally answer questions in relation to the personal meaning for being born, the meaning of life, what and who God is, why individuals experience suffering, what characterizes reality and a number of the vital questions which each and every individual seeks an answer for at some point.
